It was an ordinary Sunday morning, just like every other Sunday morning as I walked into the village hall. We stood there engaging in the normal banter and catching up on the weeks activities, oblivious to what lay above watching, with its menacing gaze upon us.
Drifting gently, moving soundlessly, waiting, observing our every move with its evil rictus grin, waiting to catch us out. Suddenly, we became aware of its presence, the emoji heart balloon in all its sinister glory.
We see them everywhere. They are ubiquitous in the technological world and even welcomed as a cheery appreciative hug from a friend when sent in an email or text. But here in the real world, invading our space, it became an uncanny reminder of how far technology has pervaded our lives.
Imagine the future; will emojis replace real emotions? Will we one day find ourselves wearing smart glasses that can read our emotions and flash up the appropriate emoticon for all to see, saving us the effort of forming our facial muscles into an arduous smile? Or will we become even more distant and disembodied from reality, retreating further into a virtual world where we no longer require direct human contact?
Borrowing the motifs of traditional fortune telling such as the crystal ball and table, my work contemplates the blurred lines between the present and potential futures, and the tension between the technological and real worlds.
